Hyundai Motor Company strengthens its partnership with the US government to develop hydrogen

Hyundai Motor Company has announced the extension of its agreement to develop hydrogen with the United States government. It is through the Department of Energy (DOE). Hyundai, beyond getting involved in the DOE Fuel and Hydrogen Cell Program, will deliver 5 new NEXO. Hyundai’s commitment is aimed at increasing technical collaboration to better understand the challenges of hydrogen. In addition, the data recorded under actual operating conditions will be collected and published.

Nikola Motors and CNH Industrial, parent company of Iveco and FPT Industrial, have reached an agreement to create a joint venture and manufacture the new Nikola Tre electric battery truck since the first quarter of 2021. For its part, the Iveco plants in Valladolid and Madrid will be responsible for supplying the battery modules, which will allow «a rapid increase in production to meet the expected strong demand.»

A chemist from RUDN (Russia) has synthesized an electrocatalyst of gold nanoparticles with organic ligands that can initiate reactions both to obtain hydrogen and to reduce oxygen in the fuel cells. The performance of the products with the new catalyst was double compared to the use of a traditional platinum-based catalyst. The article was published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A.

Instant Hydrogen Production for Powering Fuel Cells

Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing and Tsinghua University, Beijing investigate real-time, on-demand hydrogen generation for use in fuel cells, which are a quiet and clean form of energy. They describe their results in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, from AIP Publishing. The researchers used an alloy — a combination of metals — of gallium, indium, tin and bismuth to generate hydrogen.

The National Centre for Manufacturing Science has awarded a team from Nikola Powersports and Pratt&Miller Engineering a $5m grant to integrate a hydrogen fuel cell into the Nikola Reckless electric vehicle. Nikola will receive $1m of the $5m grant and will work directly with the project partners to allocate the remaining funds.

GOH: the hydrogen truck soon to be tested in Geneva

Associating the distribution giant Migros, the hydrogen specialist Green GT, the Geneva Industrial Services (SIG) and the LARAG group, specialized in trucks, the “Generation of Hydrogen” (GOH) project aims to accelerate use hydrogen in the freight transport sector. The first objective of the consortium is to put into circulation a first prototype of a 40-ton delivery truck running on hydrogen. This will be tested by Migros Geneva for its deliveries in the region.

Florida Solar Energy Center

Hydrogen research began at the Florida Solar Energy Center in 1983, when NASA / Kennedy Space Center (KSC) funded the Center to evaluate hydrogen production using a photovoltaic energy electrolyser.

Over the years, the development of applications and industries that use FSEC’s research results has been a primary objective. There have been many cases in which research work and active participation of staff have led to the development of new national technology standards and manufacturing opportunities. Another important aspect of FSEC’s industry development work has been the active creation of intellectual property through patents. Center staff members have received more than 40 patents, more than any other unit at the University of Central Florida.
