New hydrogen fuel cells for large electric boatsmartes, 20 noviembre 2018 A project of ABB and SINTEF Ocean studies, through laboratory simulations, the viability of the use of hydrogen fuel cells as the main energy source to propel large merchant and passenger ships.ABB and SINTEF Ocean are carrying out an investigation to verify the viability of the use of hydrogen fuel cells as the main energy source for merchant and passenger ships. The project tries to obtain the necessary answers to adapt this technology to the scale required by large vessels that travel long distances. The tests are being developed in the Trondheim laboratory, owned by the Norwegian company SINTEF Ocean, a specialist in research and innovations related to the naval industry. The Trondheim laboratory is a key research resource, as it provides the necessary focus for the investigation of the fine details of design innovations. Two Hydrogenics 30 kW fuel cells are used, configured to obtain a full scale simulation of a propulsion plant of several megawatts of power required by large electric boats.
