Magnetism drives the economy of hydrogenjueves, 13 junio 2019 The atmospheric CO2 levels have skyrocketed and it is increasingly urgent to find sustainable alternatives to the fuels that produce it. One of the most promising energy sources for the environment is hydrogen generated through the division of water, a reaction in which oxygen and hydrogen are produced. Now, thanks to researchers from the Catalan Institute of Chemical Research (ICIQ), this hydrogen economy is closer. In an article published in Nature Energy, scientists from the groups Galán-Mascarós and López from ICIQ describe how, for the first time, a magnet has been used to directly improve the production of hydrogen during the division of water by means of electrolysis in an alkaline medium.
