Chile’s first steps to produce green hydrogenmartes, 18 septiembre 2018 Although the German Society of International Cooperation (GIZ) had made a first approach to green hydrogen with an event last year, the one that was made a few days ago at Hotel Icon will mark a before and after the interest of our country in this element. Both authorities and the private sector are already analyzing how to give the go to produce this gas that is used as fuel, where the main advantage of Chile is its abundant production of solar energy.During the seminar «Green Hydrogen for the Energy Transition of Chile» the possibility of becoming a power in this aspect was heard several times. The event began at 8.30 am with more than 400 attendees. After 6:00 pm, there were still 300 left.To produce green hydrogen, water must be taken, which – after an electrolysis process, generates oxygen and hydrogen (see infographic), which requires a large amount of energy. Currently, about 96% of the world’s hydrogen is extracted from fossil fuels and only 4% of the water. But this is changing radically thanks to the decrease in the cost of renewable energy, especially solar energy. And Chile, is one of the producers of photovoltaic energy that has had the highest growth in recent years, which is why so many eyes are placed in the Atacama Desert, with its 3,500kWh / m2 (DNI) and 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, in addition to an average radiation of 65% more than in Europe.
